ABSTRACT

Background : Abelmoscus Manihot is an annual herbaceous plant that has recently gained attention as a next-generation income crop due to its richness in functional compounds such as phytoestrogens and collagen, which allow for diverse applications in medicine, cosmetics, and functional health foods. However, most previous studies have focused primarily on extraction methods of these bioactive compounds, whereas research on cultivation practices remains insufficient. This study was conducted to analyze the effects of different light sources on the growth and yield of A. manihot sprouts, with the aim of exploring its potential as a novel income source for farmers.

Methods and Results : The experiment was performed in the CBARES complex environmental control facility. Seedlings of Abelmoschus manihot sprouts were cultivated in horticultural soil media using 30 × 20cm growing box. The seeding density was 400g/m-2. Growth conditions were maintained at 25°C with relative humidity of 60 ± 10%. Four light treatments were applied: white light (5700 K), red light (660 nm), blue light (450 nm), and redblue mixed light (450 + 660 nm, 1:1), with a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 200 μmolm-2s-1. Growth characteristics were assessed seven days after sowing. Overall plant condition was most favorable under white light. Plant height was greater under redblue mixed light and blue light, although this was attributed to etiolation. Fresh weight per plant was highest under white light treatment, and total yield was also greatest under white light.

Conclusion : These results indicate that white light promotes balanced growth and higher biomass accumulation in A. manihot sprouts compared with monochromatic or mixed redblue light. While blue and redblue light enhanced stem elongation, this was associated with excessive etiolation and did not contribute to yield improvement. Therefore, white light is considered the most suitable light source for the commercial production of A. manihot sprouts.
